Trends from Clerkenwell Design Week 2017

Another year of Clerkenwell Design Week is in full swing. Our design team spent the first day scouting high and low for new looks starting to make an appearance. Here’s what we found…

Orange

This year orange is everywhere, from deep rust shades and burnt bronzes, to retro tangerine, turmeric, bright citrus orange and pastel coral tones. Associated with the unconventional, extraversion, warmth, fire, activity and danger it’s the perfect colour for adding energy and interest to a scheme. See our selection of orange wallcoverings here.

Warm Neutrals

We noticed a shift away from cool greys as the go-to neutral shades and towards warm sand, oat, cocoa and ginger hues. Pair with mid century  modern shapes, blonde wood, on-trend marbles and brushed brass for a soft, contemporary ‘Instagrammed’ look. Take a look at our selection of warm neutral wallcoverings here.

Velvet

It’s not a new one, but impossible to leave off the list… velvet upholstery is everywhere this year. Deep rich cobalt, mustard, burnt orange, teals, coral and of course millennial pink. Velvet glows as the light hits it, and introduces an extra element of texture and elegance when paired with marble and brass.

Masculine

Dark, moody walls are still a strong look and key for this trend. It’s all about deep colours, unfussy lines, craftsmanship and bold shapes. Think combinations of wood and leather, chunky geometric textures, bronze and glossy surfaces with an emphasis on thoughtful, artful manufacturing. We’ve been manufacturing in the UK for 50 years, read a bit about our story here.

Feature Woodgrain

This one is a continuation from the manufacturing and craftsmanship story. We saw woodgrain being used as the main feature for furniture, lighting and surface print. Showcasing the trend particularly well,  we spotted these Sunset lights from Lozi in Design Fields and we enjoyed watching Michael Northcroft at work hand carving details in the Crypt at Detail.

Millennial Pink and Green

It’s hard to miss this colour combination, it’s such a key look at Clerkenwell this year. The rich emerald green balances the prettiness of the powdery pastel pink and creates a luxe retro look. We loved deVOL’s new showroom installation (bottom right) with pink walls, vintage artwork and their gorgeous handmade tiles, ceramics and light fittings. Browse our green and pink designs here.
